When does this happen?
IF When using LangChain with OpenAI o1 or o1-mini models, SystemMessage with role 'system' results in an error: 'messages[0].role' does not support 'developer' with this model.
How others solved it
THEN Use SystemMessage with additional_kwargs={'__openai_role__': 'developer'} to explicitly set the role to 'developer', which is required by o1 models per OpenAI docs. For AzureChatOpenAI, this workaround may not work; consider using human/assistant roles instead.
