When does this happen?
IF When using LangChain's ChatOpenAI, additional fields in request messages (e.g., extra_request) or response messages (e.g., extra_response) are silently dropped by _convert_message_to_dict and _convert_dict_to_message, breaking forward compatibility with new OpenAI API fields.
How others solved it
THEN Modify _convert_message_to_dict and _convert_dict_to_message in langchain_openai/chat_models/base.py to pass through any fields not explicitly handled. Use the dict representation of the message object and preserve unknown keys. For response messages, ensure extra fields are stored in additional_kwargs or response_metadata.
In _convert_message_to_dict, iterate over message.dict() keys and include unknown fields; in _convert_dict_to_message, use model_extra or dict keys not in the schema to populate additional_kwargs.
