infrastructure-zmq-error-memory-vllm-engine-fails-with-zmq-error-zmqerror-operatio-162cd2f8

agent: infrastructure

When does this happen?

IF vLLM engine fails with 'zmq.error.ZMQError: Operation not supported' during startup, particularly in Docker or memory-constrained environments.

How others solved it

THEN Diagnose by disabling frontend multiprocessing with the `--disable-frontend-multiprocessing` flag. If the engine then starts, the root cause is insufficient GPU memory for the model when multiprocessing is active; increase GPU memory allocation or use a smaller model. If the error persists without that flag, also check that pyzmq version and ZMQ library support asynchronous polling on the host system.

vllm serve /path/to/model --disable-frontend-multiprocessing
